Boxcar Transit App Redesign

Boxcar is an integrated commuting company, focused on taking the stress out of your daily commute. Boxcar's platform is designed to connect parkers with property owners who have excess and available space. The app gives users access to an inventory of over 150 parking spaces in New Jersey and allows them to book available parking spots. Boxcar also offers users the ability to reserve seats on luxury motor coach services between New Jersey and Manhattan.

BoxCar App Redesign

"We would like the design team to evaluate the BoxCar app, identify usability issues, and find the best possible solution. Ideally, we would like a UX/UI redesign to make the app more intuitive and user-friendly." ---Boxcar

Timeline: 2.5 weeks

My role: Visual Designer, Researcher, Usability Tester, Information Architect

Problem Statement

The process of booking a parking spot on Boxcar can be lengthy and tedious, both for new and existing users. Tyra wants to book a spot she has previously parked in before, but has to go through the same lengthy process as last time.

How might we simplify the process of finding, reserving and/or renewing a parking spot, and make sure users are being informed correctly?

User-Centric Research

To understand Boxcar's users, the team conducted 6 User Interviews, 2 Usability Tests, Customer Feedback Analysis, and Metrics Analysis.

Affinity Map

After gathered all the information, we created an affinity map.

Affinity Map Insights

  • The process from booking to renewing to canceling can be difficult for both existing and potential users.
  • Two types user: commute into the city regularly or variably
  • Travel from a different train station

Persona

Based on  the 6 user interviews, we came out 3 personas, and Tyra was our primary persona.

Primary Persona

Tyra is a variable parker she plans her commute from week to week and it could differ from day to day.

Business Research

To understand Boxcar's business, the team conducted site map, and competitor analysis & Comparative analysis

Site Map

Site Map helped us understand the structure of the current app, and we proposed a simplified site map.

Site Map Improvements:

  • As-Is Site map has many overlapping categories
  • Proposed Site map simplified the categories

Design Studio & Feature Prioritization

Design Studio

Through design studio method, we visually generated many design solutions with our clients involved

Feature Prioritization

We found balance of the ideas came from design studio, and separated them into 4 parts using MoSCoW metrics, which represents Must, Should, Could, and Won't. The team started from Must to create new design.

Must have…

  • Hamburger Menu

  • Distance to Train

Could have…

  • Standardized aerial parking diagrams

  • Previous purchases on home screen

Should have…

  • Filters

  • Automatic Booking

  • Geofencing

Won’t have…

  • VR Directions

User Flow

To have a better understanding of how the new design work, we created a user flow followed the task scenario below

Task scenario:

  • Make a new reservation for a spot today in Westfield
  • Make a reservation on certain days
  • Cancel the reservation

Design

Low Fidelity Prototype

After our research and design studio, we came out a new prototype in low fidelity. Compare to the existing app on the left, we made some iterations.

We tested our Low-Fi Prototype on 4 Users

TASK SCENARIOS

  • Create a new reservation for certain days
  • Create another reservation
  • Cancel the reservation

Things don't work

  • Confusing secondary icons
  • No label for a month on the calendar
  • Confusion about favorite spots
  • Parking / Bus toggle

Mid Fidelity Prototype

Based on the usability test results, we made iterations on our mid fidelity prototype

We tested our Mid-Fi Prototype on 5 Boxcar Users

TASK SCENARIOS

  • Create a new reservation for certain days
  • Create another reservation
  • Cancel the reservation

Things don't work

  • Users did not know there was a list view
  • Not sure pin marker shows what is selected
  • Filters is overlooked
  • Tries to click on pin to get into listing

Hi Fidelity Prototype

Based on the usability test results, we made iterations on our hi fidelity prototype

We tested our Hi-Fi Prototype on 3 Boxcar Users. We got many positive feedback from current users.

TASK SCENARIOS

  • Create a new reservation for certain days
  • Create another reservation
  • Cancel the reservation

Things don't work

  • Unclear what bus means on reservation screen
  • Confusion about number of spots available on map view
  • Not enough detail on map view
